17 Jan

Lot 6795, 1st Floor, Jalan Kuching, Taman Tunku, 98000 Miri, Sarawak.

So finally I had the opportunity to visit this 360 Fitness Gym at Taman Tunku. It’s located beside 7 day food court if you are familiar with Taman Tunku location. If not, you can’t miss it. If you are turning in from the main road. Head straight down the road till you see the traffic lights beside Survey Supermarket. Turn Right and head on straight till you see a row of shops. You can’t miss it.

quite a number of dumbbells for use.

quite a number of dumbbells for use.

So its a very straight forward gym. From the entrance, to the far left u have the cardio machines. nearing the entrance you have all the machines and free weights bench. and to the right you have the dumbbells and the cablecross Machine. It’s very spacious and clean. The washroom too and with a water dispenser at your disposal. Windows on all 3 corners of the room with ample fans. I spotted 1 air-con which is off. No point since all the windows are open. The crowds are not too bad. A healthy dose.

heaviest dumbbell is at 25 lbs. not too heavy but its quite a bit for fitness. would be nice if they have some heavier ones

So if you are a dumbbell person, don’t worry they have a full set of dumbbells. ranging from light to the max weight at 25lbs. well, a little light compared to most gyms but I guess if you are not those Hardcore Beast, its not too much of an issue for fitness enthusiast. The dumbbells are still in very clean and tight conditions.

now not a lot of gym has the full size cablecross machine and this has got to be a thumbs up

now not a lot of gym has the full size cablecross machine and this has got to be a thumbs up

Then on the other side of the wall nested a cable cross machine. The full size with adjustable pulley. Its a good solid set. Smooth. the only issue is there aren’t much choice on the bars and there was no rope. A bit too close to the mirror though so if you are trying to work on your cable cross for pecs, you might not want to be facing the mirror. Lockers not too many but its huge if you have a  80liter rucksack.. it fits.

seated preacher curl is a standard issue in Miri

So seated right beside the cable cross machine is the seated preacher curl station. Standard issue with the E-Z Bar.

There are lots of Machines in this gym. standards ones like the chest press and pec deck

So I notice a huge amount of machines placed neatly and uniformly across the room. Starting with the chest press, seated leg extension/curl, back extension/machine crunch… and so forth. Well, the pec-dec/rear delt machine is placed further down. not too sure why but the Smith-Machine is right behind the chest press. I guess its the placement of the chest machines in an L-Shape. the machines look sturdy and solid and still in very good conditions.

Smith Machine looks good but a bit shaky. nothing a good adjustment of angles cant fix

This is a very solid smith-machine. Though I tried it a little, its tilting to one side. probably the footing need to be adjusted and angled properly. But overall, its a very nice piece without the “Counter Weight” like some of the gyms here. Smooth and oiled and ready to be stacked with heavy plates.

its pretty spacious in the gym. good for breathing space

its pretty spacious in the gym. good for breathing space

As you can see, space is the value of the gym. Lots of rooms to move about and you won’t find it being uncomfortable with your workout space.

A lot of gym's in Miri are selling supplements. The tubs are not available yet but u can get per scoop

So you find the counter with the stash of Supplements. Though its not for sale, maybe in the future, they do sell per scoop at RM10 for proteins (Nitro-Tech)

Good to know the leg machines in good condition and well

I was hoping that they had Leg-Press Machine but the only one available is the convertable Seated Leg Curl/Extension set.

its pretty standard for this Back extension/machine crunch in Miri

its pretty standard for this Back extension/machine crunch in Miri

I don’t use this machine much but it helps to ease the stress of the manual back extension raise plus its safer. Of course, provided you don’t press it all the way back and just try to step off. and with the very common combo of machine crunch its like the favourite among most.

Lots of Free weigh bench stations. From Incline to Decline

Lots of Free weigh bench stations. From Incline to Decline

For those free weights enthusiast, here is something to look forward to. It’s good to know they have the standard width Bench stations which allows good head room and wide enough grip as well as sturdy support. From The Incline Bench on the far side of the room, to the Decline Bench in the middle up till the flat. You will be expecting a full range of bench with lots of weights at your disposal.

Im sure a lot of Mirian would love these good solid sets of Cardio Bikes.

2 spinning bikes. I would say, this is only under supervision that one should try as its not the traditional stationary bike. Unless of course, if you are familiar with the Spinning classes or RPM. And the good old traditional Back Extension station right next to it.

And ample Cardio Machines for a good crowd size

And ample Cardio Machines for a good crowd size

Here you find ample supply of cardio machines with 4 treadmills and 2 elliptical trainer. Good amount for a gym this size. Plus the grade of these machines are for industrial use. Though its not facing a good view, but the windows in front provides a good breeze.

Quite a rare sight in Miri for this kind of Lat pull down but its a good to have with the availability of the isolation choice

Quite a rare sight in Miri for this kind of Lat pull down but its a good to have with the availability of the isolation choice

I guess 1 machine that caught my eye is this 2 pulley lat pull down machine. with the availability to switch from normal set to isolated sets on the top pulley. I love isolated workouts. And with this machines, you can actually pull off a great lat workout as the angle is not fixed to a straight downwards pull.

Came along with this machine is the paring seated row function. I won’t say i like it very much as the angle of the foot placement is not too kind. and the length of the seat is a little short when it comes to getting a good stretch at the top. But it’s a good enough set to get a great lats workout.

Good sturdy Machines for heavy use

for those who knows me.. this is a must post. the fusion of the Pec-Dec / rear delt machine .. the angle and weights is perfect

for those who knows me.. this is a must post. the fusion of the Pec-Dec / rear delt machine .. the angle and weights is perfect

And definitely a thumbs up choice on this set cause not a lot of gyms in Miri has this. 2 way system for great chest and rear delt workout. I didn’t try it on the pec dec but its definitely a good machine for Rear Delt. Good amount of weights for those stronger ones.

Summary

I would say its a pretty neat gym (very neat visually and clean) with clean carpets and its brightly lit. The machines are ample and the free weights too. with a good amount of plates and cardio machine. Machines are smooth and solid as well as very new. Toilets and changing rooms clean. though its a little small and can only house a moderate amount of people in the gym at one time but when the crowd is light, one can really get a great workout here. rated for fitness enthusiast.

Old don’t mean Out

17 Aug

call me boring but I prefer the old school method of building my body without fancy moves. it may be boring but its definitely working as it should and recorded

Maybe I started a long time ago when Frank Zane, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Dorian Yates, Franco Columbu, Flex wheeler, Sergio Oliva… etc. (names not arranged in popularity order) was on every fitness enthusiast lips or having their posters in every gym. When books and reference is all we can get and there was no internet nor youtube to refer to. All we got was the bookshops with books, reference books & magazines written by the Legends or Published on their behalf. I know I got my “Arnold Schwarzenegger encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding” when I was 15 at I’ve to save a few months just to buy it off the shelves in Miri at RM80. Obviously mom disagreed and I couldn’t get the sponsorship from her. lol. But it was the only book I ever bought on bodybuilding then. I never had magazines on bodybuilding. As to why I bought this book? Cause Arnold knows his shit and he was my idol.

My 1st reference.. of course there are lots of terms which was very foreign to me.. like Martian’s language

From there I learn the basics compound moves like Bench press, chin ups, SQUATS!!! (I just love the squats), Deadlifts, Military Press, Dip… etc. And it’s what works. Of course back then it was just the movements and copying what I see on the pictures without understanding the importance of quality reps. A lesson learned in a hard way which caused me to limp for 2 years. Bad forms and Ego sure kills.

As I’ve mentioned before, after 9 years of rest, inactive lifestyle and research I came back into fitness with humility, sensibility and logic. I start of slow, light, basic and strict. Stacking up weights as I get stronger. Now and then I’ll have a few heavy days. But it’s always the basic compound movements.

Biceps are always Dumbbell / barbell / E-Z barbell curls / preacher curls / hammer curls, isolated dumbbell / cable curls, cable rope / bar curls…

Triceps are always Cable Rope / Bar / E-Z Bar Triceps / V-bar Pressdown, Skull Crusher, Cable Rope / Bar / E-Z Bar Triceps Extensions, Weighted Bench Dips, Isolated Dumbbell Triceps Extension, Isolated Dumbbell Kickback…

Chest – Bench press. Be it Incline, flat or decline, Flys variations of dumbbell / cable and machine, Dumbbell Pullover, Dips..

Back, Shoulders, Legs.. u get where I’m going… would be a list. but it’s all the traditional, straight to the point movements where you know it’s working the targeted movements. No fancy pose or movements to make it more fun and enjoyable. Bodybuilding is a lonely sport to most. To me especially cause I want to make the most out of it and have full concentration during each session and not waste time talking. Most think of it as a boring sport due to repetitive motions for long period of time so find it hard to maintain the momentum and stay on track. Hence there are tons of fancy, interesting moments being promoted just to make it more fun and interesting for those who finds it hard to commit to the real game. For one, safety was a concern. Having been a fitness trainer in a few gyms, I’ve seen some who twist, fracture, sprain and all sorta other injuries related to these new routines. There is nothing wrong with these new routines and workouts. Plus it encourages people to participate in a more active lifestyle. Just that the safety was overlooked and not many are informed on what should or not be done. Some just copied bluntly from the internet or youtube whereby a “Disclaimer warnings” has 1st beforehand inform them that they will not be held liable for any accidents or injuries occurred. But what can I say, it’s definitely making workout more fun and enjoyable.

What I recommends is go Old School. The traditional way how the Legends train and build up an awesome physiques. If it was wrong, hey, would we have idolized their Godly physiques? It may seem boring but it’s safe and proven. Serious Builders like myself are easily spotted training in these manner. Both types of workout works towards the same goal. Fitness & health. Different results but not everyone choose to be Incredible HULK! As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and remember to make safety the 1ST PRIORITY!!
